Saving money is hard work am I right?

It’s even harder when you set really unrealistic and lofty goals for yourself and end up giving up when the going gets tough and the going somehow always manages to get tough because life happens ya know? I’ve been there and done that far more times than I’d like to admit folks. So, it’s probably not surprising that Sam and I use a simple, realistic savings charts to help keep us motivated and on track with our saving efforts . We started using a chart similar to the one below many moons ago and we still have a copy up on our fridge to this very day. I totally geek out when I can cross a box off the chart!

I’m a huge proponent of creating and living by a realistic budget and this $1000 savings plan is awesome because it’s totally flexible and works with any budget no matter how big or small.

With this $1000 savings plan – saving as little as $1000 in a year is literally a breeze.

Easy $1000 Savings Plan

How the $1000 savings plan works

Every week (same day preferably) have a look at your budget and pick the highest number you can afford to save from the $1000 savings plan chart. Don’t deprive yourself of necessities but do consider scaling back on things like meals out, expensive cups of store bought takeaway coffee and store bought lunches. Consider what financial obligations you’ve got going that week and pick a box from the $1000 savings plan chart accordingly.

Maybe bills are outstanding, kids activity fees are due and grocery needs to be bought right? No problem, pick a lower number that works with your budget at that moment.

If however, it’s a pretty light week financially, challenge yourself to choosing the largest number you can. Instead of ordering that pizza because you’ve got an extra $20 laying around put it towards your savings by choosing a higher number. The goal is to cross off as many of the higher numbers on your $1000 savings plan chart as you can and as quickly as you can.

To challenge yourself even further (and based on your personal budget of course) feel free to double, triple or even quadruple every box as you work through your savings plan chart on a week to week basis. The more you put away on a weekly basis the quicker that savings account grows!

Easy peasy right?

Why a $1000 savings plan chart works

#1 It’s Realistic. This saving chart is awesome because it breaks down a larger savings plan into small realistic numbers. Setting yourself the goal of saving $1000 can become really overwhelming if you’re just starting out and don’t know how much to save and when. This chart guarantees that you’ll save $1000 in 52 weeks if you set aside every amount outlined in each box.

#2 It’s Flexible. If you’ve got more money coming in or know you’re facing a couple of hard weeks financially – no problem. The chart allows for financial ups and downs which are part of just about everyone’s life. By staggering the saving amount you have the power to choose a number that reflects your financial situation from week to week.

#3 It’s appropriate for any budget. If you’re a higher income earner and want to start a more aggressive savings plan – GREAT! Feel free to double, triple, quadruple or even add a zero to the end of each of these amounts. If you’re in a situation where you can add a 0 to these numbers you’re looking at the potential of saving $10 000 in just one year! Not too shabby am I right?

#4 It’s simple to complete. Print the chart and stick it to your fridge, office cork board or keep it in your agenda or wallet. As the weeks pass simply cross off, highlight or color in the box that you’ve completed. Trust me when I tell you that you’ll get a rush after checking off each and every box. This chart not only makes saving $1000 organized and convenient but it’s super satisfying as well!

I love coming across savings plans. Some of them are just so unrealistic for me, but this is realistic, and fits my budget. I’m getting a late start, but it’s better late than never.

Thanks for sharing this post. Based on a study that I read a while ago, 50% of American households have less than $ 10k in savings. It is important to remind people to put some cash away for the rainy days and this is a very manageable and practical approach. Love it!

This is such a great idea!! We’ve been struggling so much with saving this past year. We’re currently living in Southern California and have one income for three people and a dog. Money is so tight living here. We’re hoping it’s a lot better once we move back to our home state this summer. But we’ll definitely have to try this and see if it helps!

We always try to have $1000 in savings as a cushion. We have needed to use it many times. It is well worth having a plan and commitment to having savings available all the time.
