Toilet Paper Roll Stamped Cauldron Craft

This toilet paper roll stamped cauldron craft is a fun and easy Halloween activity for preschool and kindergarten kids!

Using our free printable cauldron template, black construction paper, colorful paint, and a couple of empty toilet paper rolls, kids can create their very own bubbling witch’s potion.

I love Halloween crafts that use simple supplies we already have around the house or classroom, and this one is a perfect example!

Kids will have so much fun dipping cardboard tubes into bright orange, purple, and green paint to stamp colorful bubbles rising out of their cauldrons.

It’s a great combination of cutting, gluing, coloring, and process art that encourages creativity while helping little hands build important fine motor skills.

Whether you’re planning a Halloween classroom craft, a witch-themed preschool activity, or a fun project to pair with Room on the Broom, this bubbling cauldron craft is a great choice.

Why We Love This Halloween Cauldron Craft

toilet paper roll stamped cauldron craft

There are so many reasons to love this simple Halloween craft for kids!

First, it uses inexpensive supplies. Empty toilet paper rolls make fantastic painting tools, and chances are you already have construction paper, markers, and washable paint on hand.

Second, it’s wonderfully open-ended. Although every child starts with the same printable cauldron template, their finished projects will look completely different.

Some children might create giant purple bubbles, while others stamp dozens of tiny-looking overlapping circles in different colors.

And that’s exactly what makes this craft so much fun!

Here are a few more reasons this activity is perfect for preschool and kindergarten:

  • 🎨 Encourages creativity: Kids can experiment with different potion colors and bubble arrangements.
  • ✂️ Builds fine motor skills: Tracing, cutting, coloring, and gluing provide valuable hands-on practice.
  • 🟢 Develops hand-eye coordination: Stamping with a cardboard tube encourages controlled movements.
  • 🌈 Introduces color mixing: Overlapping paint colors creates opportunities to explore what happens when colors combine.
  • ♻️ Reuses everyday materials: Empty cardboard tubes become inexpensive Halloween art supplies.
  • 🧙 Perfect for Halloween themes: A great addition to witch, potion, and Halloween classroom units.

Supplies You’ll Need

Gather these simple supplies before getting started:

  • Free printable cauldron craft template – you can snag a copy of the pdf file at the very bottom of this blog post
  • White cardstock
  • Black cardstock or construction paper
  • Bright green construction paper or white paper to color
  • Washable tempera paint in orange, purple, and green
  • Empty toilet paper rolls
  • Markers or crayons
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Paper plate or paint tray

My tip: I recommend using washable tempera paint for this activity. It works well for stamping, dries relatively quickly, and makes cleanup much easier when crafting with little ones.

White cardstock also makes a sturdier background than regular printer paper, especially when children use lots of paint.

Download Our Free Printable Cauldron Craft Template

To make this Halloween craft even easier, I’ve created a free printable cauldron template that includes two separate pieces:

  1. A large cauldron shape that children can trace onto black cardstock paper.
  2. A wavy potion shape that children can trace onto green paper or color with markers.

Using separate pieces gives children an opportunity to practice tracing, cutting, and assembling their own Halloween cauldron.

Print the template at 100% scale on good quality 8.5 x 11-inch white cardstock paper.

For younger preschoolers who aren’t ready to cut independently, an adult can prepare the shapes ahead of time.

Older preschoolers and kindergarten students can practice tracing and cutting their own pieces.

How to Make a Toilet Paper Roll Stamped Cauldron Craft

Ready to make your own paper roll stamped cauldron? Follow these simple steps!

Step 1: Trace and Cut Out the Cauldron

paper tube cauldron craft

Start by printing our free cauldron craft template.

Cut out the large cauldron shape and use it to trace the outline onto black construction paper or cardstock.

Carefully cut along the traced lines.

You should now have a black paper cauldron with a rounded body and two little feet.

Classroom tip: If you’re making this craft with a large group of preschoolers, consider preparing the black cauldrons ahead of time so children can focus on assembling and stamping their potions.

Step 2: Create the Colorful Potion

Next, cut out the separate wavy potion template.

Trace it onto bright green construction paper and cut it out.

Alternatively, children can trace the shape onto white paper and color it using markers or crayons.

We used bright green for our potion, but purple, orange, or even a combination of colors would look fantastic!

Encourage children to choose whatever color they think a magical Halloween potion should be.

Step 3: Assemble the Cauldron

paper tube cauldron craft

Glue the black paper cauldron onto the bottom half of a sheet of white cardstock.

Leave plenty of empty space above the cauldron for the stamped bubbles.

Next, glue the colorful potion piece along the top opening of the cauldron, allowing its wavy edge to extend slightly above the rim.

Press both pieces down gently to secure them.

Your cauldron is now ready for its bubbling potion!

Step 4: Prepare the Paint and Cardboard Tubes

Pour small amounts of orange, green, and purple washable tempera paint onto a paper plate or paint tray.

Give each child an empty toilet paper roll.

Dip one end of the cardboard tube into the paint, making sure the circular edge is lightly coated.

Tip: A thin layer of paint works best. Too much paint can make the stamped circles look like blobs instead of bubbles.

You can use a different toilet paper roll for each color or wipe the end between colors.

Step 5: Stamp the Bubbling Potion

Now comes the really fun part!

Show children how to gently press the paint-covered end of their toilet paper roll onto the white paper above the cauldron.

When they lift the tube, they’ll see a colorful circular bubble!

Continue dipping and stamping to create lots of bubbles rising out of the potion.

Encourage children to overlap their circles, experiment with different colors, and fill as much or as little of the page as they like.

Some bubbles might be perfectly round, while others will be incomplete or slightly smudged.

That’s completely fine!

Those little imperfections are what make each finished Halloween craft unique.

Step 6: Let Your Halloween Cauldron Dry

Once children are happy with their bubbling potions, set the crafts aside to dry completely.

The finished projects will feature a black paper cauldron filled with bright green potion and surrounded by colorful stamped bubbles.

I especially love how the orange, purple, and green paint pops against the white background and black construction paper.

Every finished cauldron will be a little different, making this a fantastic project for a Halloween classroom bulletin board or hallway display.

Ways to Extend the Learning

This paper roll stamped cauldron is lots of fun on its own, but there are also some simple ways to turn it into an educational activity.

Practice Counting

Ask children to count how many bubbles they’ve stamped.

You can even challenge them to stamp a specific number of bubbles.

For example, preschoolers might stamp five green bubbles and three purple bubbles before counting how many they made altogether.

Explore Colors and Color Mixing

Invite children to experiment with overlapping different paint colors.

What happens when orange and purple overlap? What about green and orange?

It’s a simple way to introduce color exploration through hands-on art.

Build Vocabulary and Language Skills

Encourage children to imagine what’s inside their magical cauldrons.

Ask questions like:

  • What ingredients are in your potion?
  • What happens when someone drinks it?
  • Is your potion silly, spooky, or magical?
  • What would you name your potion?

Younger children can describe their ideas aloud, while kindergarten students can write a sentence about their magical creations.

Make a Halloween Bulletin Board

This craft would make an adorable Halloween classroom display!

Arrange the finished cauldrons on a bulletin board with a fun title like:

“Our Little Witches Are Brewing Up Something Special!”

I love the idea of displaying everyone’s cauldrons together because the different paint colors, bubble patterns, and stamping styles really show off each child’s creativity.

Halloween Books to Pair With This Cauldron Craft

One of my favorite ways to make crafts more meaningful is to pair them with a children’s picture book.

This bubbling paper roll stampled cauldron is especially fun for a Halloween read-aloud because it connects so naturally with stories about witches, magic, and silly potions.

Here are a few wonderful books to read before or after making your cauldrons.

Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson

My favorite pairing for this craft! Room on the Broom is a wonderful Halloween story about a friendly witch, her cat, and the animals who join them on their broomstick.

The rhyming text, lovable characters, and themes of kindness and friendship make it a fantastic read-aloud for preschool and kindergarten.

After reading, invite children to imagine what kind of magical potion the witch might make in her cauldron.

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid Of Anything is an interactive Halloween favorite ifull of repetition, movement, and just the right amount of spooky fun.

Children love joining in with the sounds and actions as the little old lady encounters some very unusual objects on her walk home.

It’s a great choice for a Halloween storytime followed by a hands-on craft.

Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman

In Big Pumpkin, a witch needs help getting a giant pumpkin off its vine.

A ghost, vampire, mummy, and bat all try to help, making this a wonderful book for introducing cooperation and teamwork.

Pair it with this bubbling cauldron craft for a fun witch-themed preschool activity.

The Witch’s Cat and the Cooking Catastrophe by Kirstie Watson

This charming picture book follows a witch’s cat as she tries to help with a magical cooking project.

The Witch’s Cat and The Cooking Catastrophe is a fun pairing for children who love imagining silly ingredients, magical recipes, and bubbling potions.

After reading, encourage children to invent their own pretend potion recipes.

Winnie the Witch by Valerie Thomas and Korky Paul

Winnie The Witch has been entertaining young readers for years!

This colorful story is filled with magical mishaps and silly surprises, making it another fun choice for a witch-themed Halloween craft.

Children can imagine the colorful potions Winnie might create in her own cauldron.
