These boredom busting Summer activities are the result of me attempting to home school my preschooler when our school district cancelled the school year in March 2020.
My 4.5 year old isn’t super interested in any type of traditional learning activities. As a result, traditional counting and number practice will not work in our house. So, I created my own thematic Count & Color activities to sneak in some number, sorting and coloring practice.
She has a very short attention span and I’m glad to report that these free printable Count & Color activities are a huge hit in our home.
About Count & Color Games
The learning objectives of these Count and Color activities include:
- Numeracy skills including counting and sorting.
- Pattern recognition skills including identifying similar objects.
- Coloring skills including hand strength and motor skills.
- Identifying colors and coloring objects appropriately.
- Reading skills to determine colors in the more difficult stencil (see below).
The idea behind this collection of boredom busting summer activities for kids is simple. Children are asked to count and color all similar objects which helps them practice their counting, sorting and coloring skills.

Recommended Supplies
The beauty of these boredom busting summer activities for kids is that they require very little in the way of supplies. But, we do suggest a few basic things to make the Count & Color activity as fun as possible.
We recommend the following supplies:
- A color printer to ensure that the color coding comes through for non readers
- Good quality printing paper to prevent markers from bleeding through or crayons and pencils from ripping through
- High quality wax crayons, markers or coloring pencils.
