What Are Dolch Sight Words

primer dolch sight word list

Dolch sight words are basically a list of high frequency words that are used in the English language.

The list was compiled by Edward William Dolch, who believed strongly in the “whole-word” method of early reading instruction.

Simply put, if young children can master these common and frequently occurring words they will have a good base to start beginning reading.

In total, the complete list of Dolch site words contains 220 high frequency words that often appear in early reading materials and books for young children.

Common Sight Words

How To Play Sight Words Bingo

Step 1: Download and print our kindergarten sight word bingo game. For detailed download instructions see the detailed download instructions we created in the next section of this blog post.

Step 2: Cut out each bingo board. Cut out the first of the calling cards into 40 rectangles along the dotted lines. Cut out as many bingo markers as you’ll need. If you are playing with a big group of children then plan to print a couple of pages of bingo markers.

Step 3: Decide who will be the bingo caller. The bingo caller will place all 40 bingo pieces in a bag or bowl and give them a good toss to shake them up.

Step 4: Give each player their own bingo cards. If you are more than 18 players you can create small groups or print a second copy of our kindergarten sight word bingo so that each child gets their own card.

Step 5: The bingo caller starts pulling a bingo piece from the bag/bowl. This is a great opportunity to have students practice identifying their Dolch sight words. Children mark the Dolch sight word on their card using a bingo marker. The first child to get a straight line up, down, across or diagonally BINGOS!
