The Book That Inspired This Craft

This activity pairs wonderfully with the picture book Plant the Tiny Seed by Christie Matheson.
In the story, children help the seed grow by clapping, tapping, and interacting with the pages as the plant grows from a tiny seed into a beautiful flower.
After reading the book, this craft becomes a wonderful extension activity, allowing kids to create their own blooming Zinnia flowers.
Reading the story first helps children:
- Connect the craft to how plants grow
- Build excitement for spring and gardening
- Reinforce early science concepts including the lifecycle of a flower
Supplies You’ll Need

To make this mosaic flower craft, you’ll need:
- Our free printable mosaic flower template – you can get a copy of the pdf file at the very bottom of this blog post
- White cardstock – a high quality cardstock like Neenah White produces a superior finished product
- Colored construction paper for mosaic squares in blue, green, yellow
- Colored paper for flower petals
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Markers or crayons
Tip: Using pre-cut cardstock squares can make this activity easier for younger kids.
How to Make the Mosaic Flower Craft
1. Print the Template
Start by printing the free mosaic flower template on good quality white cardstock.
The template includes an an area for grass, sky and the sun in addition to 3 flower stems.

2. Create the Mosaic Background
Children fill the background areas with small paper squares.
Use:
- Blue squares for the sky
- Green squares for the grass
- Yellow squares for the sun
Glue the pieces down to create a colorful mosaic effect.
Encourage kids to slightly vary placement; this makes the finished artwork look more like real mosaic art when it is complete.

3. Create the Zinnia Flowers
Now it’s time to make the flowers!
Instead of building the flowers separately, children glue rectangular paper pieces directly onto the page to form the petals.
Start by gluing the rectangles around the top of each stem to create the first layer of petals. Arrange the pieces in a circular shape so they spread outward from the stem.
Next, add a second layer of rectangular petals, slightly overlapping the first layer. Kids can use the same color or mix different colors to create bright and unique flowers.
Layering the rectangles helps give the flowers a full, textured look, similar to real Zinnias.

4. Add the Flower Centers
Cut small yellow circles of construction paper and glue them to the center of each flower.
Kids can then draw tiny dots or lines to give the center seeds, just like real flowers.
Now your spring mosaic garden is complete!
