This patriotic pom pom flag craft is one of our favorite fun patriotic crafts to make with young children. It’s loads of fun to make but also works on good things like creativity and fine motor.
Our patriotic pom-pom flag craft is the perfect craft if you’re looking for a hands-on project to make for the 4th. These fun pom-pom flags are created using simple supplies like craft sticks, paint and white, blue and red pom poms.
Once completed, children will proudly want to display their own unique American flag at a 4th of July decoration.

What You’ll Need
To make our patriotic pom pom flag craft you’ll need the following supplies.
You can purchase these from local craft stores, Dollar tree or online via Amazon.

- Jumbo craft sticks
- Scissors
- School glue or a glue gun
- White paint and a paintbrush
- Medium sized red and blue pom poms
- Small white pom poms
How To Make A Patriotic Pom Pom Flag Craft
Step 1: Create the shape of your flag using jumbo craft sticks.
You’ll need 6 popsicle sticks to create the flag and 2 popsicle sticks to hold it together.
Stack 6 popsicle sticks and then glue 2 popsicle sticks vertically to make the shape hold together.
If you’re in a rush and want to reduce drying time you can use hot glue. Adult supervision is required if you go the hot glue route.
Trim off the extra popsicle stick using scissors.
Step 2: Paint your dried flag with white acrylic paint.
We used a large stencil brush because it we prefer it for painting it large surfaces.
Allow your painted white flag to dry before moving on to the next step. You may have to do more than one coat of paint depending on how well the paint covers your sticks.
Step 3: Create red stripes by gluing red pom poms to your flag.
We created 5 red rows using medium sized pom poms.
Make sure to leave a space between your rows to create your white stripes and leave space for your blue pom poms and stars in the upper left corner.
You may need less or extra pieces to create your patriotic pom pom flag craft depending on the size of the pom poms you use.
If your pom poms are larger you’ll need less for each row. We used medium sized pom poms and needed 9 red pom poms for full rows and 6 for the shorter rows at the top of the flag.
If you don’t have patriotic pom poms you can also used self-adhesive foam pieces in red, white and blue.
Step 4: Glue 9 blue pom poms in the top left space to create a blue square.
Step 5: Stick 9 mini white pom poms into the center of each blue pom pom to create the stars.
Step 6: (Optional) Add a nylon string or taffeta 4th of July ribbon to the back of your patriotic pom poms flag to hang it as a great decoration for the 4th. Or, add an extra popsicle stick to the left edge to create a flag pole!
