Plus, kids love seeing their own names become part of the craft which is always lots of fun.

This crab name craft is more than just a fun summer activity, it’s also a hands-on way for young children to practice important early learning skills through creative play. As kids color, cut, glue, and spell their names, they’re building foundational literacy and fine motor skills in an engaging and meaningful way.

It’s a wonderful hands-on literacy activity for preschool, kindergarten, daycare, homeschool, or summer camp programs.

Turn This Into An Ocean-Themed Learning Unit

crab name craft

This crab name craft pairs perfectly with an ocean or beach-themed learning unit for preschool and kindergarten children. You can combine this activity with ocean books, sensory bins, printable worksheets, and other under-the-sea crafts to create a full week of hands-on learning and fun.

Read Ocean-Themed Picture Books

Reading ocean-themed picture books alongside this craft is a wonderful way to encourage early literacy and spark curiosity about marine life.

Here are a handful of my absolute favorites:

The Rainbow Fish – A beautifully illustrated ocean story that teaches children about kindness, friendship, and sharing through the journey of a shimmering rainbow fish.

Commotion in The Ocean – This fun rhyming book introduces kids to a variety of sea creatures with playful poems and colorful underwater illustrations.

Mister Seahorse – Written by Eric Carle, this charming ocean-themed story explores sea life while celebrating the unique role fathers play in caring for their babies.

Hello, Crabby! – A funny and engaging beach-themed story that younger kids especially love during summer learning units.

Way Down Deep in the Deep Blue Sea – A colorful rhyming story filled with ocean animals that works beautifully for circle time and read-alouds.

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Shell! – A playful summer twist on the classic “Old Lady” series that pairs perfectly with beach and ocean crafts.

Incorporate Ocean Sensory Bins

Create a simple ocean sensory bin using kinetic sand, seashells, scoops, blue water beads, and plastic sea animals.

Sensory play is a wonderful activity helps children strengthen fine motor skills while encouraging imaginative, hands-on exploration during your ocean theme unit.

Practice Counting With Sea Animals

Use small plastic ocean animals, counting cards, or printable math activities to practice counting, sorting, and pattern recognition.

This is an easy way to add early math skills into your ocean-themed learning unit while keeping activities playful and engaging.

Make Additional Ocean-Themed Crafts

Extend the fun by creating even more ocean-themed crafts and name activities throughout the week.

Kids will love making jellyfish, fish, palm trees, surfboards, and beach-themed crafts while continuing to practice important fine motor and literacy skills.

Torn Paper Jelly Fish – A fun ocean craft where kids tear and glue colorful paper pieces to create a textured jellyfish while practicing fine motor skills and creativity.

Surfboard Name Craft – A beach-themed name activity where children design their own surfboard and spell out their name while building early literacy skills.

Paper Plate Octopus Craft – An easy under-the-sea craft where kids transform a paper plate into a playful octopus while strengthening cutting, gluing, and decorating skills.

Aquarium Craft – Cute hands-on ocean scene activity where children build their own mini aquarium filled with sea creatures to spark imagination and storytelling.

Jelly-Fish Name Craft – Easy personalized ocean craft where kids create a jellyfish using the letters of their name to support spelling and name recognition.

Palm Tree Name Craft – Fun summer-themed name craft where children build a tropical palm tree while practicing letter order and fine motor skills.
