Materials

  • Printable monster template – get the pdf template at the bottom of this post
  • White cardstock or heavy paper – our go to is Neenah White
  • Coloring supplies – markers, crayons, colored pencils
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick or white glue
  • Black marker – to write letters
  • Optional extras: googly eyes, glitter, stickers, sequins

Instructions

  1. Print & Prepare – Print the monster template on cardstock so it holds up well.
  2. Color Your Monster – Let kids color the monster any way they like – wild patterns, stripes, polka dots, or classic monster colors. Encourage them to make it as cute or scary as they want.
  3. Cut Out the Monster – Carefully cut along the outer edge of the monster. Younger kids may need help.
  4. Cut Out The Name Circles – Cut out the name circles from the template. Plan to cut one circle per letter in the child’s name.
  5. Write the Letters – Use a black marker or pen to write one letter on each circle. You might also let the child do this step (if age appropriate) to practice letter writing.
  6. Glue on the Name Circles Arrange the circles in order across the monster’s front (e.g. tummy) and glue them in place.
  7. Add Optional Embellishments – If desired, add googly eyes, glitter, stickers, or other decorations to make each monster unique.

Tips & Variations

monster name craft
  • Mix sizes – If the name is long, make the circles smaller or use two rows.
  • Use foam – Instead of cardstock, use foam sheets for a bit of dimension.
  • Double-sided – Make two monsters and glue together back to back so the craft is sturdy and visible from both sides.
  • Glow in the dark – Use glow-in-the-dark markers or stickers for a spooky nighttime effect.
  • Classroom display – Mount all the monsters on a bulletin board and spell “Happy Halloween” or “Monster Names” above them.
  • Letter practice – Before gluing, ask kids to lay out the name circles in correct order, or mix them and have them reorder them.
  • Scary theme – Draw fangs, extra eyes, or sharp claws. For a “cute” theme, use pastel colors and sweet faces.

Educational Benefits

monster name craft
  • Letter recognition & spelling – Children see and handle each letter in their name.
  • Fine motor skills – Cutting small shapes, gluing, and arranging pieces strengthen dexterity.
  • Creativity & choice – Kids make design decisions (colors, embellishments) giving them ownership of their craft.
  • Confidence & pride – Seeing their name up front on a monster boosts their identity as learners and creators.

How to Include It in Your Classroom or Home

monster name craft
  • Use it as a Halloween party booth activity to keep kids engaged while waiting or mingling.
  • Assign as a take-home project for families to complete and share.
  • Combine with a “monster name book” – after making the monster, each child can write a short story about “Monster [Name].”
  • Pair with monster-themed reading (books about monsters) for an interdisciplinary twist.
  • Use as a name recognition icebreaker at the start of the year, especially in younger grades.
