To make this craft as easy as possible, I’ve created a free printable template that includes all the pieces you’ll need.

The printable template includes:

  • A tall, narrow leaf outline for creating the colorful turkey feathers
  • A semicircle base for arranging and attaching the leaves
  • A turkey body with a rounded head
  • Two printable eyes
  • A triangular beak
  • A teardrop-shaped wattle

Simply print the template, cut out the shapes, and use them to trace the pieces onto construction paper.

For the colorful feathers, you’ll use the same leaf outline several times to create a collection of red, orange, and yellow leaves.

How to Make a Fall Leaf Turkey Craft

Follow these simple step-by-step instructions to make your own colorful paper leaf turkey.

Step 1: Print and Cut Out the Template

Start by downloading and printing our free fall leaf turkey craft template.

Carefully cut out the semicircle base, turkey body, leaf outline, eyes, beak, and wattle.

The printable shapes make it easy to prepare the craft without having to draw each piece by hand.

For younger children who are still developing their scissor skills, an adult can prepare some of the smaller pieces ahead of time.

Step 2: Trace and Cut Out the Paper Leaves

Next, use the leaf outline to create your turkey’s colorful feathers.

Trace the leaf onto red, orange, and yellow construction paper.

Cut out several leaves in each color. You’ll want enough leaves to create a full fan of feathers behind the turkey’s body.

I love using a mixture of all three colors because they remind me of the beautiful changing leaves we see during fall.

Don’t worry if the leaves aren’t all perfectly cut. Slightly uneven edges give each turkey a unique, handmade look!

Step 3: Prepare the Semicircle Base

Now it’s time to prepare the base that will hold all the colorful leaves together.

Place the semicircle on your work surface with the curved edge facing upward.

This piece will act as the foundation for the turkey’s feathers and will eventually be hidden behind the brown turkey body.

Using a base makes it much easier for children to arrange their leaves before assembling the finished craft.

Step 4: Arrange and Glue the Leaf Feathers

fall leaf turkey craft

This is my favorite part of the craft!

Start arranging the colorful paper leaves around the curved edge of the semicircle, with the pointed tips extending outward.

Overlap the bottoms of the leaves slightly to create a full, fan-shaped arrangement.

Try alternating red, orange, and yellow leaves for a colorful fall look.

Once you’re happy with the arrangement, glue the bottom of each leaf onto the semicircle base.

Encourage children to experiment with the placement of their leaves.

Some might prefer a symmetrical pattern, while others will enjoy mixing the colors and angles.

Both approaches make adorable turkeys!

Step 5: Add the Turkey Body

Next, trace the turkey body template onto brown construction paper and carefully cut it out.

Apply glue to the back of the brown turkey body.

Position it over the center of the leaf feathers, making sure the colorful leaves extend around the top and sides.

Press gently to secure the body in place.

The brown turkey body should cover the semicircle base and the glued ends of the leaves, leaving the colorful feathers visible behind it.

Your fall leaf turkey is really starting to come together!

Step 6: Add the Eyes, Beak, and Wattle

Now it’s time to give your turkey some personality!

Start by cutting out the two printable eyes and gluing them near the top of the turkey’s head.

Next, trace the triangular beak onto orange construction paper and the teardrop-shaped wattle onto red construction paper.

Cut out both shapes.

Glue the orange beak just below the eyes, then attach the red wattle underneath it.

You can also use googly eyes if you’d like to give your turkey a slightly different look.

And that’s it!

Your adorable fall leaf turkey craft is complete and ready to display!

Tips for Making This Turkey Craft With Preschoolers

Here are a few simple tips to make this Thanksgiving craft easier for younger children.

Prepare the smaller pieces ahead of time. The eyes, beak, and wattle can be tricky for little hands to cut. Preparing these pieces in advance helps younger children focus on arranging and gluing the leaves.

Offer pre-cut leaves when needed. Children who aren’t ready to cut the detailed leaf outlines can still enjoy choosing colors and arranging the feathers.

Let children choose their colors. While I used traditional fall colors, there’s no reason your turkey can’t have purple, pink, or green feathers!

Arrange before gluing. Encourage children to lay out their leaves first so they can experiment with different patterns before making anything permanent.

Embrace the imperfections. Crooked feathers, uneven cutting, and slightly misplaced eyes are all part of what makes children’s crafts so special.

Educational Benefits of This Fall Turkey Craft

fall leaf turkey craft

This easy paper turkey craft is more than just a cute Thanksgiving activity.

It’s also a great opportunity to practice important early learning skills.

Fine motor skills: Tracing, cutting, and gluing help strengthen the small muscles in children’s hands.

Hand-eye coordination: Positioning the leaves around the semicircle encourages children to work carefully and control their movements.

Color recognition: Children can identify and sort red, orange, and yellow leaves as they work.

Patterning: Encourage children to arrange the leaves in a repeating color pattern, such as red, orange, yellow, red, orange, yellow.

Creativity: Choosing colors and deciding where to place each feather allows children to make their own artistic decisions.

For a little extra learning, ask children to count how many leaves they’ve used or compare the number of leaves in each color.

Our Favorite Turkey and Thanksgiving Books for Kids

fall leaf turkey craft book recommendations

One of my favorite ways to turn a simple craft into a more meaningful learning activity is to pair it with a good picture book.

Reading a Thanksgiving or turkey-themed story before crafting is a wonderful way to introduce the activity, build vocabulary, and encourage conversation.

Here are a few fun books that would pair beautifully with this fall leaf turkey craft.

1. How to Catch a Turkey – A silly Thanksgiving story about a turkey trying to escape before the school play. It’s a fun choice for a classroom read-aloud and pairs perfectly with a turkey craft.

2. Turkey Trouble – Turkey knows Thanksgiving is coming, and he’s determined not to become dinner! Children will love the funny disguises he comes up with.

3. A Turkey for Thanksgiving – A sweet and funny Thanksgiving story with a surprise ending. This is a lovely choice for introducing a turkey-themed activity.

4. There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Turkey! – This silly, repetitive story is always fun to read aloud with younger children. The predictable format makes it especially engaging for preschoolers.

5. The Very Stuffed Turkey – A fun Thanksgiving story about a turkey who receives invitations to several holiday dinners. It’s a great book for talking about friendship and celebrating together.
