Either way, the results are absolutely adorable!

Supplies You’ll Need

fingerprint turkey craft for kids

You only need a handful of inexpensive craft supplies to make this fingerprint turkey craft.

Here’s what we used:

  • Free printable turkey craft template – Includes the semicircle feather template, turkey body, eyes, beak, and wattle. You can snag a copy of the pdf file at the bottom of this blog post.
  • White cardstock – We recommend Neenah white cardstock for the fingerprint feathers because it holds up well to paint.
  • Brown construction paper – For the turkey’s head and body.
  • Orange construction paper – For the turkey’s beak.
  • Red construction paper – For the turkey’s wattle.
  • Washable tempera paint – We used red, orange, yellow, and brown fall colors.
  • Child-safe scissors – For cutting out the turkey pieces.
  • Glue stick – To assemble the finished turkey.
  • Pencil – For tracing the template pieces.

Our tip: We love using purple disappearing glue sticks with younger children. The purple color makes it easy for little ones to see exactly where they’ve applied glue!

How to Make a Fingerprint Turkey Craft

Ready to make your own adorable fingerprint turkey craft?

Follow these simple step-by-step instructions to create this colorful fingerprint turkey craft with your preschoolers or kindergarteners.

Step 1: Make the Fingerprint Turkey Feathers

fingerprint turkey craft for kids

Start by printing the semicircle feather template onto white cardstock.

Pour small amounts of red, orange, yellow, and brown washable tempera paint onto a paper plate or paint palette.

Invite children to dip one finger into the paint and gently press it onto the semicircle template to create colorful fingerprints.

For our turkey, we made curved rows of fingerprints that followed the shape of the semicircle.

We alternated between different fall colors to create a bright, rainbow-inspired feather design.

Encourage children to fill their semicircle with as many fingerprints as they’d like!

Younger children might prefer making random fingerprints, while older preschoolers and kindergarteners may enjoy creating repeating color patterns.

Both approaches work beautifully.

Helpful tip: Keep a damp paper towel or baby wipe nearby so children can clean their fingers when switching paint colors.

Step 2: Let the Paint Dry and Cut Out the Feathers

fingerprint turkey craft for kids

Once children have finished decorating their turkey feathers, set the painted semicircle aside to dry completely.

Depending on how much paint they’ve used, this may take a little while.

When the paint is dry, carefully cut around the outside edge of the semicircle template.

You should now have one large, colorful semicircle filled with beautiful fingerprint feathers.

This will become the feather section behind your turkey’s body.

Preschool tip: If you’re working with younger children who are still developing their scissor skills, you can help them cut around the curved edge or prepare the feather pieces ahead of time.

Step 3: Trace and Cut Out the Turkey Body

fingerprint turkey craft for kids

Next, grab the turkey body template and a sheet of brown construction paper.

Have children place the template onto the brown paper and carefully trace around the outside using a pencil.

Once they’ve finished tracing, cut out the turkey’s body.

Our turkey body has a rounded head connected to a larger, oval-shaped body.

This simple shape makes it easy to assemble the finished craft.

Tracing and cutting are wonderful opportunities for children to practice hand-eye coordination and strengthen the small muscles in their hands.

Step 4: Make the Turkey’s Beak and Wattle

fingerprint turkey craft for kids

Now it’s time to prepare the turkey’s facial features!

Using the printable template, trace the triangle-shaped beak onto orange construction paper.

Next, trace the wattle onto red construction paper.

Carefully cut out both pieces.

The bright orange beak and red wattle will give your turkey its classic Thanksgiving appearance.

For younger preschoolers, consider preparing these smaller pieces in advance since they can be a little tricky to cut.

Step 5: Cut Out the Turkey’s Eyes

fingerprint turkey craft

Next, cut out the two eyes included in the free printable turkey template.

Our template includes two round eyes with black pupils, giving the turkey a cute, wide-eyed expression.

You could even substitute googly eyes if you have some in your craft supplies!

Step 6: Assemble Your Fingerprint Turkey Craft

fingerprint turkey craft for kids

Now comes the fun part – putting everything together!

Start by placing the colorful fingerprint semicircle on your work surface with the rounded edge facing upward.

Apply glue to the back of the brown turkey body and position it in the center of the fingerprint feathers.

Press down gently to secure everything in place.

Next, glue the two eyes near the top of the turkey’s head.

Attach the orange triangle beak just below the eyes.

Finally, glue the red wattle beneath the beak, allowing it to hang down along one side.

And that’s it!

Your adorable fingerprint turkey craft is complete!

We love how the colorful fingerprint feathers make each finished turkey unique.

Display your turkeys on a Thanksgiving bulletin board, decorate your classroom door, or send them home as a sweet holiday keepsake for families.

Tips for Making Fingerprint Turkeys With Preschoolers

This Thanksgiving turkey craft is simple enough for preschoolers, but a little preparation can make the activity even easier.

Prepare the supplies ahead of time. Print the templates, set out the construction paper, and pour small amounts of washable paint onto paper plates before inviting children to begin.

Use cardstock for the feathers. Regular printer paper can wrinkle when little fingers apply too much paint. White cardstock creates a sturdier base.

Encourage creativity. While we used curved rows of fall-colored fingerprints, children don’t need to follow a specific pattern. Let them experiment with different colors and arrangements.

Make cutting easier. If your preschoolers aren’t ready to cut around curved shapes independently, offer assistance or prepare some pieces ahead of time.

Allow plenty of drying time. We recommend painting the feathers first and setting them aside while children work on tracing and cutting the remaining pieces.

Turn it into a learning activity. Ask children to identify paint colors, count fingerprints, or create simple repeating patterns as they decorate their feathers.

Educational Benefits of This Thanksgiving Craft

fingerprint turkey craft

This easy fingerprint turkey craft is more than just a cute Thanksgiving art project!

It also provides several opportunities for hands-on learning.

Color recognition: Children practice identifying and naming fall colors like red, orange, yellow, and brown.

Patterning skills: Encourage children to create repeating color patterns as they decorate their turkey feathers.

Hand-eye coordination: Tracing and cutting around the turkey template helps children develop control and coordination.

Creativity and self-expression: Every child can choose how to decorate their turkey, making each finished craft one of a kind.

For an extra math activity, invite children to count the fingerprints in one row or compare which color they used most.

You can even extend the learning with our Thanksgiving worksheets or Thanksgiving pumpkin pie number matching game.

Both make wonderful additions to a Thanksgiving-themed preschool learning center.
