How To Make A Fork Painted Pufferfish Craft
This craft is simple enough for younger children while still being engaging for older kids.
Step 1: Print The Template
Print the pufferfish craft template on high-quality cardstock for best results. We recommend using Neenah White Cardstock because it’s thick, bright white, and holds paint exceptionally well without becoming soggy or wrinkled.
The first and last pages of the template (the pufferfish body and face pieces) should be printed on white cardstock. The second page (the fins) can either be printed directly onto colored cardstock or printed on white cardstock and colored in by hand using markers, crayons, or colored pencils. Both options look adorable, so feel free to use whatever works best for your children or classroom setup.
Step 2: Color The Template
Before painting the pufferfish, have children color in the “Have A Puffer-fect Summer” pun at the top of the page as well as the ocean floor scene at the bottom.
Markers, crayons, and colored pencils all work well for this step. Encourage children to use bright, cheerful colors to create a vibrant underwater scene filled with personality. This is also a great opportunity for kids to get creative and make their pufferfish craft unique.
Step 3: Paint The First Layer

Choose your first paint color and pour a small amount onto a paper plate or paint tray. Dip a plastic fork into the paint and press it onto the circular pufferfish body using short outward strokes. Slightly dragging the fork outward as you paint creates a fun textured pattern that resembles the spiky appearance of a real pufferfish.
Continue layering fork marks around the entire circle until the pufferfish body is mostly covered. Don’t worry about making it perfect — the overlapping fork strokes are what give this craft its fun textured look.
Once the first coat is complete, set the craft aside and allow the paint to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Step 4: Paint The Second Layer

After the first layer of paint has dried, repeat the process using a second paint color or a darker shade of the same color. Layering multiple shades gives the pufferfish extra depth and texture while helping the finished craft really stand out.
Using the fork again, lightly paint over parts of the first layer while still allowing some of the original color to show through. The overlapping colors create a vibrant tropical effect that makes the pufferfish look bright, textured, and full of personality.
Set the craft aside once again and allow the second layer of paint to dry completely before assembling the pufferfish.
Step 5: Cut And Assemble The Pufferfish

Carefully cut out the fins, eyes, and mouth pieces from the template pages. Younger children may need assistance with cutting.
Using a small amount of glue, attach the fins to each side of the painted pufferfish body. Then glue on the eyes and mouth to bring your silly little ocean creature to life.
Once assembled, your colorful fork painted pufferfish is ready to display on bulletin boards, classroom walls, refrigerators, or summer craft displays!

Drying between layers keeps the colors vibrant and prevents muddy paint.
