Printable Rocket Template Craft
Learning about the solar system and making space crafts is always a big hit with younger kids!
So, we wanted to create this free rocket ship template for kids to build their own rocket ships.
This simple activity involves tracing, cutting and assembling a fun rocket ship.
Our paper rocket template craft is an educational activity that works on a wide range of skills including fine motor skills like hand-eye coordination, creativity and critical thinking.
This is one of those fun craft projects you can save for a rainy day at home or use as part of a space theme unit in the classroom.
Either way, we know it will be a fun activity for kids of all ages.

What You’ll Need
You’ll need very simple supplies to make this rocket ship craft. Here is what you should have handy:
- copy of our printable rocket template (the download link for the free template as a pdf file is located at the bottom of this post)
- printer and white printer paper for printing the free rocket template
- pencil and eraser for tracing
- construction paper or cardstock paper in a variety of colors for building your colorful craft rocket
- black paper for your printable rocket ships background
- scissors (we LOVE these child safety scissors from Amazon)
- Glue stick
- white paint (optional)
Making a Rocket Craft
This printable rocket template is a simple craft that is quick and easy to make.
Here are the detailed instructions your children should follow as they make this fun rocket craft.
Step 1: use scissors to cut out each part of the rocket ship and accessories like show above.
Step 2: trace each part of the rocket ship onto different colored craft papers. We used yellow to make our flame cutouts and circular window. While green, red and blue were used to build the different parts of our rocket. Any colors would work. So, let a child’s imagination pick their preferred colors. An easy way to complete this step is to have children use their non dominant pointer finger to hold down each section as they trace using a pencil.
Step 3: Using a glue stick, children need to glue their rocket ship back together on a black piece of paper. You can also use dark blue construction paper – the goal is to make the rocket look like it’s flying through the night sky. Children can glue their rocket ship in a variety of different angles – either making it look like their rocket is taking off or landing. There’s no perfect way.
Step 4: Glue stars and moon shapes to their rocket ship craft. If students prefer they can even use white paint and a paintbrush or tissue paper to make their night sky come to life.
Step 5: (Optional) If you plan to display these rocket ship crafts on a bulletin board in your classroom then make sure each child clearly writes their name on the back of the rocket or the bottom of the rocket ship.

This printable rocket template was created on regular paper – 8.5 x 11 standard size copy paper will work just fine to print the template.
Before printing, confirm that the printable rocket template fits nicely in the print space using print preview. Should you need to you can scale the printable rocket template up or down should it get cut off.
