I love crafts that use simple supplies we already have around the house or classroom, and this one is especially fun because no two turkeys will look exactly alike!

Easy Toilet Paper Roll Turkey Craft

If you’ve got a few empty toilet paper rolls tucked away in your craft supplies, this is a great way to put them to good use!

Instead of using a paintbrush to create the turkey’s feathers, children dip the end of a cardboard tube into colorful tempera paint and stamp overlapping circles onto white cardstock.

The result is a beautiful collection of red, orange, yellow, and brown circles that look like a turkey’s feathers.

Once the paint is dry, kids use our free printable turkey template to assemble their turkey with a brown body, orange beak, red wattle, and two eyes.

This easy Thanksgiving craft is especially great for preschool and kindergarten classrooms because the stamping process is simple enough for little hands.

And since every child can choose their own colors and stamping patterns, each finished turkey is completely unique!

  • 🎨 Color exploration: Kids can experiment with traditional fall colors like red, orange, yellow, and brown.
  • ✂️ Cutting and gluing practice: Assembling the turkey gives children opportunities to practice using scissors and glue.
  • ♻️ Recycled materials: This craft puts empty toilet paper rolls to good use.

Supplies You’ll Need

toilet paper roll stamped turkey craft

You only need a handful of simple craft supplies to make this toilet paper roll stamped turkey craft.

A quick tip: I recommend using a separate toilet paper roll for each paint color if you’re making this craft with a group of children. This helps prevent the colors from getting muddy and makes the stamping process easier.

How to Make a Toilet Paper Roll Stamped Turkey

Ready to make your own colorful Thanksgiving turkey? Follow these simple step-by-step instructions!

Step 1: Print and Prepare the Turkey Template

toilet paper roll stamped turkey craft

Start by downloading and printing our free turkey craft template.

The printable includes the turkey’s body, eyes, beak, and wattle.

Cut out the template pieces and use them to trace the turkey’s body onto brown construction paper, the beak onto orange construction paper, and the wattle onto red construction paper.

Carefully cut out all the pieces and set them aside.

You can also prepare these pieces ahead of time if you’re making this craft with younger preschoolers.

Older children can practice tracing and cutting the shapes independently.

Step 2: Prepare the Paint

Pour a small amount of red, orange, yellow, and brown washable tempera paint onto separate paper plates or shallow trays.

Give each child a sheet of white cardstock and an empty toilet paper roll.

Show children how to hold the cardboard tube upright and gently dip one end into the paint.

You only need a thin layer of paint around the rim of the tube to create a colorful circular stamp.

Step 3: Stamp the Turkey’s Colorful Feathers

Now comes the fun part!

Encourage children to press the paint-covered end of their toilet paper roll onto the white cardstock.

When they lift the tube, they’ll see a colorful circle!

Continue dipping and stamping, switching between red, orange, yellow, and brown paint to create lots of overlapping circles.

Encourage children to concentrate their stamping toward the center and upper portion of the page, where the turkey’s feathers will be visible behind its body.

Some circles might overlap, while others might be incomplete or a little smudged.

That’s completely fine!

Those little imperfections are what make each turkey special.

Keep stamping until you’ve created a colorful background of feathers.

Step 4: Let the Paint Dry

Once children are happy with their stamped feathers, set the cardstock aside to dry completely.

Depending on how much paint they’ve used, this may take a little while.

While the paint dries, children can work on cutting out their turkey template pieces or enjoy a Thanksgiving story.

Step 5: Glue the Turkey’s Body in Place

Once the stamped paint is completely dry, it’s time to assemble the turkey!

Apply glue to the back of the large brown turkey body.

Position it over the center of the colorful stamped circles, making sure plenty of the red, orange, yellow, and brown feathers are visible around the sides and top.

Press down gently to secure the body to the cardstock.

The colorful stamped circles should look like a big, beautiful fan of turkey feathers behind the brown body.

Step 6: Add the Turkey’s Face

Now it’s time to give your turkey some personality!

Glue the two eyes near the top of the turkey’s head.

Next, attach the orange triangle beak just below the eyes.

Finally, glue the red wattle underneath the beak, letting it hang down along one side.

And that’s it!

Your adorable toilet paper roll stamped turkey craft is complete and ready to display!

Tips for Making This Craft With Preschoolers

toilet paper roll stamped turkey craft

This Thanksgiving turkey craft is easy to adapt for different ages and abilities.

Prepare the template pieces ahead of time. If you’re working with younger preschoolers, consider cutting out the turkey bodies, beaks, wattles, and eyes before starting.

Use shallow paint trays. A thin layer of paint makes it easier for children to stamp clear circles without making a big mess.

Let children experiment. Some kids might prefer lots of overlapping circles, while others will create a more spaced-out pattern. Both look great!

Make it a two-day activity. Stamp the feathers on the first day and assemble the turkeys once the paint has dried.

Create a Thanksgiving bulletin board. Display the finished turkeys together with a fun heading like “Gobble Up Some Creativity!” or “Our Little Turkeys!”
