Thanksgiving Pumpkin Pie Number Matching Game

There’s just something about pumpkin pie that makes Thanksgiving extra special! 🥧

And this year, we’re bringing a little pumpkin pie fun into our preschool and kindergarten math centers with a brand-new Thanksgiving pumpkin pie number matching game!

This free printable activity includes 10 whole pumpkin pie cards numbered 1–10 and 10 matching cards featuring the corresponding number of pumpkin pie slices.

Children count the slices, identify the number on the whole pie, and find the matching pair.

It’s simple, colorful, and a fun way to sneak a little early math practice into your Thanksgiving celebrations.

I especially love activities like this because they feel more like a game than traditional math practice. Little learners get to count, match, and play while strengthening important early numeracy skills.

Whether you’re planning November classroom centers, looking for Thanksgiving crafts and activities, or simply need a screen-free activity to keep little hands busy, this printable is a fun choice!

Why You’ll Love This Thanksgiving Number Matching Game

pumpkin pie number matching game

This pumpkin pie counting game is one of those activities that’s easy to prepare and can be used again and again.

Here’s why I think you’ll love it:

  • 🥧 Free printable: Download, print, and prepare the cards for an easy Thanksgiving math activity. Get the pdf at the very bottom of this blog post.
  • 🔢 Numbers 1–10: Perfect for preschoolers and kindergarteners learning to recognize numbers and count objects.
  • ✂️ Fine motor practice: Cutting, picking up, and arranging the cards helps strengthen little hand muscles.
  • 🧡 Hands-on learning: Children actively count pumpkin pie slices rather than simply identifying numbers on a worksheet.
  • 🏫 Classroom friendly: Great for November morning tubs, math centers, small groups, and independent practice.
  • ♻️ Reusable: Laminate the cards so you can enjoy this Thanksgiving counting game year after year.

And because the game uses adorable pumpkin pie illustrations, it’s also a fun activity to pair with your favorite Thanksgiving books and pumpkin-themed crafts!

What’s Included in the Free Pumpkin Pie Number Matching Printable?

pumpkin pie number matching game

Our free Thanksgiving pumpkin pie number matching game includes 20 printable matching cards covering numbers 1–10.

Each matching pair includes:

  • One whole pumpkin pie card: Features a large numeral from 1–10.
  • One pumpkin pie slice card: Features the corresponding number of individual pumpkin pie slices for children to count.

For example, children match the whole pumpkin pie labeled 4 with the card showing four slices of pie.

The printable includes 10 matching pairs arranged across four activity pages, plus a cover and information page.

The cards feature colorful pumpkin pie illustrations with whipped cream, easy-to-read numerals, and dotted borders for cutting.

Once the cards are prepared, you’re ready to play!

Supplies You’ll Need

One of my favorite things about printable learning games is that they don’t require a long list of supplies.

Here’s what you’ll need to prepare your pumpkin pie matching game:

  • Our free Thanksgiving Pumpkin Pie Number Matching Game printable. You can snag a copy of the file at the bottom of this blog post.
  • White cardstock – I recommend printing on cardstock so the cards are sturdier and easier for little hands to manage.
  • Laminator or self-laminating sheets – Optional, but highly recommended if you’re planning to use the game in a classroom.
  • Kid-friendly scissors – For cutting out the matching cards.
  • Storage pouches – Perfect for keeping all 20 cards together.

My classroom tip: I love laminating printable games before cutting them apart. It makes the cards more durable, especially when they’re going to be used in busy preschool and kindergarten learning centers.

You can also store the finished cards in a small photo storage box or reusable zipper pouch so they’re easy to grab throughout November.

The printable includes all 10 matching pairs, covering numbers 1–10.

Step 2: Print the Matching Cards

Print the activity pages on good quality white cardstock.

I recommend printing at actual size so the cards maintain their intended proportions.

The bright orange pumpkin pies and matching slices look especially cute when printed in color!

Step 3: Laminate for Durability

If you’re planning to reuse the game, laminate the printed sheets before cutting out the individual cards.

This is especially helpful for classroom math centers, morning tubs, and small-group activities where the cards will be handled frequently.

Step 4: Cut Out the Cards

Carefully cut along the dotted borders to separate the 20 individual cards.

You’ll end up with 10 whole pumpkin pie number cards and 10 matching pumpkin pie slice cards.

Step 5: Mix, Match, and Play!

Place the whole pumpkin pie cards on one side of the table and the pumpkin pie slice cards on the other.

Invite children to choose a number card, count the corresponding number of slices, and find the matching pair.

Continue until all 10 pumpkin pies have been matched correctly.

And that’s it!

Your Thanksgiving pumpkin pie number matching game is ready for some hands-on counting fun!

How to Play the Thanksgiving Pumpkin Pie Number Matching Game

pumpkin pie number matching game

There are several ways to use these printable cards depending on your child’s age and skill level.

1. Classic Number Matching

Spread the whole pumpkin pie cards across a table or work mat.

Place the pumpkin pie slice cards in a separate pile.

Have children choose a whole pie, identify the number, and find the card showing the correct number of slices.

For example, a whole pumpkin pie labeled 6 matches the card featuring six individual slices.

This is a great activity for practicing number recognition and one-to-one correspondence.

2. Thanksgiving Math Center

Turn the printable into an independent Thanksgiving math center!

Place the laminated cards inside a small storage container and add them to your November math tubs.

Children can work independently or with a partner to count the slices and match each set to the correct numeral.

For younger preschoolers, start with numbers 1–5 and gradually introduce numbers 6–10 as their counting skills improve.

3. Pumpkin Pie Memory Game

For a fun twist, turn the cards into a Thanksgiving memory matching game.

Place the cards face down on a table and have children take turns flipping over two cards.

If they reveal a whole pumpkin pie and a slice card with the corresponding quantity, they keep the pair.

If the cards don’t match, they turn them face down and try again.

Continue playing until all the matching pairs have been found.

Tip: Start with just three or four pairs for younger children to make the game more manageable.

4. Number Order Challenge

Once children have matched all 10 pairs, encourage them to arrange the whole pumpkin pies in numerical order from 1–10.

Then, invite them to place the corresponding slice cards beneath each numeral.

For an extra challenge, remove one number card and ask children to identify which number is missing.

5. Count and Clap

This is a fun way to incorporate a little movement into your Thanksgiving math practice.

Have children select a pumpkin pie number card, identify the numeral, and clap that many times.

Then, they find the matching slice card to check their counting.

You can also have children stomp, jump, or tap the table instead of clapping.

What Skills Does This Thanksgiving Math Game Teach?

pumpkin pie number matching game

Although this printable looks like a simple matching game, it helps children develop several important early math skills.

Number recognition: Children practice identifying numerals from 1–10.

One-to-one correspondence: Counting each pumpkin pie slice helps children understand that each object represents one number in the counting sequence.

Counting and cardinality: Children learn that the final number they say when counting tells them how many objects are in a group.

Visual discrimination: Children compare groups of pumpkin pie slices and recognize differences in quantity.

Fine motor skills: Picking up, sorting, and arranging the cards helps strengthen hand-eye coordination and fine motor control.

Concentration and problem-solving: Matching the correct number of objects to a numeral encourages children to think carefully and check their work.

This makes the game especially useful for preschool, pre-K, kindergarten, and early elementary students who are still building confidence with numbers.
