My craft group loves making suncatcher crafts! They’re a low-prep activity that works great for kids as young as 3, but they’re also fun and engaging for older kids, too.
To celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd, I created this simple Earth Day suncatcher craft.
Made with just cardstock, contact paper, and tissue paper squares, it’s the perfect addition to a classroom Earth Day unit or a Pre-K activity lineup focused on caring for our planet and the environment.
Supplies
- Earth Day Suncatcher Template – Grab the free PDF at the bottom of this post.
- Cardstock – We recommend Neenah white cardstock for best results.
- Scissors – For cutting out the suncatcher template.
- Green Marker, Crayon, or Colored Pencil – To color in the land areas on the Earth.
- Clear Contact Paper – To create the sticky surface for your suncatcher design.
- Tissue Paper – Use pre-cut tissue paper squares or tear tissue sheets into small pieces.
Instructions
Step 1: Print the Earth Day suncatcher template on high-quality white cardstock. We recommend Neenah white for a sturdy, long-lasting result.
Step 2: Use a green marker, crayon, or colored pencil to color in the land masses on the Earth.
Step 3: Carefully cut out the Earth template, including the sections around the land masses where the water would be.
Step 4: Place the cut-out Earth face down onto a piece of contact paper. Make sure the sticky side of the contact paper is facing up.
Step 5: Add small pieces of blue tissue paper to the sticky contact paper to fill in the water areas around the continents.
Step 6: Once finished, trim any excess contact paper from around the edges of your suncatcher.
Step 7: Hang your Earth Day suncatcher in a sunny window and watch the light shine beautifully through the colors!
