  2. Prepare the tissue paper – Cut or tear tissue paper into small squares or shapes. (Pre-cut squares work great for little hands!)
  3. Cut the template – Carefully cut out the outline of your chosen design. Then cut out the inside section so it’s ready to be filled with tissue paper.
  4. Add the sticky base – Place a sheet of contact paper sticky-side up. Position your template face down on the sticky side.
  5. Fill with color – Cover the inside of your design with tissue paper pieces in your choice of Halloween colors.
  6. Seal it – When the design is complete, place another sheet of contact paper on top to seal everything in place.

Learning Opportunities & Benefits

halloween suncatchers

Crafting isn’t just fun, it’s also a great way for kids to learn and practice important skills. Making Halloween suncatchers gives children a chance to:

  • Strengthen fine motor skills – Cutting, gluing, and placing small tissue paper pieces helps improve hand-eye coordination and scissor skills.
  • Explore creativity – Kids get to choose colors, patterns, and designs, making each suncatcher unique.
  • Practice following directions – Step-by-step crafting builds listening skills and patience as children work through the project.
  • Learn about colors and light – Watching sunlight shine through the tissue paper is a fun, hands-on way to explore how colors mix and change.
  • Build confidence – Completing a craft from start to finish gives kids a sense of accomplishment and pride in their work.
  • Encourage screen-free fun – This activity offers a calm, hands-on alternative to screens, perfect for home or classroom settings.

Not only do these Halloween suncatchers make festive decorations, but they also provide meaningful learning experiences disguised as play!

Variations & Fun Ideas

halloween suncatchers

One of the best things about these Halloween suncatchers is how easy they are to customize! Here are some fun ways to mix things up:

  • Try different colors – Who says pumpkins have to be orange? Make a purple jack-o’-lantern, a rainbow ghost, or a neon Frankenstein.
  • Add glitter – Sprinkle a little glitter between the tissue paper layers for extra sparkle when the sun shines through.
  • Use patterned tissue paper – Polka dots, stripes, or metallics add fun texture and dimension.
  • Make mini suncatchers – Shrink the template before printing to create smaller designs that can be hung on a Halloween tree or strung together as a garland.
  • Layer tissue paper shapes – Instead of squares, cut stars, hearts, or even tiny pumpkins from tissue paper to create patterns inside your suncatcher.
  • Glow-in-the-dark twist – Add glow-in-the-dark stickers or accents so your suncatcher shows up at night too.
  • Group project idea – Have kids each make one character (pumpkin, bat, ghost, or Frankenstein) and display them together in a classroom or on a family window for a full Halloween scene.

These little tweaks make these Halloween suncatchers even more engaging while letting kids express their creativity in fun, unique ways.
