This Christmas tree sun catcher craft is an easy Christmas craft for kids of all ages.

All you’ll need is our free template, tissue paper and some contact paper to make this easy kids Christmas craft this holiday season.

Christmas Tree Sun Catcher Craft

We’ve been on a Christmas crafts frenzy! And, today I’m so excited to share this cute Christmas tree sun catcher craft with you.

These easy suncatchers are a great way to have some screen free fun in anticipation of the holiday season. Younger and older children will enjoy creating their own Christmas tree suncatcher because they can be creative and create sun catchers that are truly one of a kind.

The best part? This simple Christmas tree craft works on really great stuff like fine motor skills, scissor skills and creativity.

Craft Supplies

  • Christmas tree sun catcher template – the tree shape printable you’ll need to make these Christmas suncatchers can be found at the very bottom of this blog posts.
  • Construction paper – we used green construction paper but you can use a variety of colors
  • Contact paper
  • Tissue paper in a variety of colors
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Self-adhesive gems (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Print a copy of our Christmas tree sun catcher template on white card stock paper. Scroll to the bottom of this blog post to find the download form to get the pdf file you will need to make this sun catcher craft.

Step 2: Cut out the Christmas tree shape. Using a pencil, trace the tree shape onto construction paper of your choice. We used green but you can also use black construction paper. In fact, any color would work so let children be creative.

Step 3: Cut out the Christmas tree shape from your construction paper.

Step 4: Use a pencil to drawn a Christmas tree inside your green tree. This goal is to create a thick border for your Christmas tree suncatcher. Our border was approximately 1/2 an inch thick.

Step 5: Create your Christmas tree frame by cutting out the inner Christmas tree. To make this step easier you can poke a hole through the center of the shape to get started. 

Step 6: Cut your tissue paper into small squares. Our squares were approximately 1 inch squares. We used red and yellow tissue paper to make our tree but you can use squares of tissue paper in any color.

Step 7: Stick your Christmas tree frame onto a piece of contact paper with the sticky side facing up.

Step 8: Give children pre-cut tissue paper squares. Encourage them to cover the whole tree in tissue paper squares alternating the color as they go.

Step 9: The final step of this simple craft is cutting off the extra contact paper.

Step 10: Decorate your Christmas tree using self-adhesive gems. We added some to give our tree the illusion of Christmas lights or Christmas tree ornaments.
