Not only is it super simple to make using our free template, construction paper, and some glue, but it’s also a great way to strengthen those fine motor skills as kids tear and glue the paper pieces into place.

Supplies

  • Watermelon Template – Grab your free copy at the bottom of this post!
  • White cardstock paper – For printing the watermelon slice template.
  • Construction Paper – One sheet of green and one sheet of red (for that perfect watermelon look).
  • Glue – To stick those torn paper pieces in place.
  • Scissors – For cutting out the template pieces (grown-ups might need to help with this part!).
  • Black and Red Markers – For adding those sweet little watermelon seeds and extra details.

Instructions

Print and Cut – Start by printing out our free watermelon template on white cardstock (we love Neenah white because it’s sturdy and holds up well to glue). Carefully cut out the watermelon slice — grown-ups might want to help with this part!

Make the Rind -Tear your green construction paper into small pieces. Spread a little glue on the rind section of the template and start sticking down the green pieces. Layer them up for a fun, textured look!

Create the Fruit – Now tear up the red construction paper into small pieces. Glue them onto the main part of the watermelon slice to create the juicy fruit. Tip: Slightly overlap the pieces to make it look extra realistic!

Add a Face – Cut out the watermelon’s eyes and mouth from the template. Glue them onto the slice — give your watermelon a cute little personality!

Add the Seeds – Use a black marker to color in the watermelon seeds, cut them out, and glue them onto the red part of the slice. Scatter them around to make it look just right!

Let It Dry – Set your torn paper watermelon aside and let it dry completely. Once it’s ready, display your adorable watermelon craft for everyone to see! 🍉😊
