Torn Paper Butterfly Craft

Butterflies are a sure sign that warmer days are here!

And, this torn paper butterfly craft is a fun and simple way for kids to create their own colorful butterflies while working on fine motor skills.

With our free printable template, some construction paper, and a little glue, preschoolers and elementary-aged kids can design a unique butterfly in just a few easy to follow steps.

This craft is a great choice for spring crafting and adds a cheerful touch to any art project. Just tear, glue, and watch these beautiful butterflies take shape!

Supplies

  • Butterfly template – you can download a copy of the free butterfly template you’ll need to make this torn paper butterfly craft at the very bottom of this blog post
  • Cardstock in blue for printing the template
  • Colorful construction paper
  • Glue stick
  • Sharpie or black marker
  • Googly eyes

Instructions

Print a copy of our free printable butterfly template on blue cardstock.

Tear up green construction paper and glue it to the entire area below the butterfly. This will be a grassy patch below the butterfly.

Tear up white construction paper and glue it to create white fluffy clouds.

Tear up construction paper in your favorite color to create the butterfly’s body. We went with yellow but you can use any color you want.

Tear construction paper in a variety of colors to create the butterfly wings. Using a small amount of glue attach colorful pieces of torn paper all over the butterfly wings.

Using a small about of glue or glue dots attach the googly eyes to your butterfly.

Cut out two small black circles to create the top of the butterflies antennae. Glue them to the top of the antennae using a small amount of glue.

Using a sharpie or black marker draw a mouth on your butterfly.

Let your torn paper butterfly craft dry completely before displaying or playing with it.
